My husband is adamant that we need to have our son circumcised.

He has read studies that show that it is generally 'cleaner' to have it done, and it has also been found that it significantly lowers the risk of infection for HIV and any STD's and other infections in the 'nether-regions'
I have contacted my paed, and they have advised that it would need to be done by a general surgeon, under anesthetics.
As this is deemed an elective procedure by the medical aid, they will not pay for it.
General enquiries have led me to find out that this costs about R8000.00 for the surgeon and anesthesiologist.

Has anyone else had their boys 'snipped'? If you are based in Cape Town, where did you have it done?
If you are comfortable divulging, how much did it cost?

I am still undecided about this, no-one on our family has been circumsised and I feel it is unnecessary pain that will be inflicted on my boy? What is your take on this?

Hey Lollipop - my son was circumcised and birth. I was at Panorama, and my Paed recommended the person who would do it.

I have two friends who had it done later with thier sons due to ongoing health issues, unfortunately I can't get hold of them to ask them who they used.

I know we spoke about this issue a few months back on this thread:

www.moomie.co.za/forum/5-your-baby/97621...-doing-it.html#98123

and there are varying schools of thought.

I am suprised your paed has not recommended you to a surgeon. If it was elective then MA won't cover it, and only if your paed and the consulting specialist deem it to be necessary will MA cover it.

Can I ask why you did not consider this when he was born, or is it because you have read more over the last 8 months and have a different view on it.

The older your son gets the more traumatic it gets for them - my DH had it done when he was about 9 years old, and he recalls it wasn't exactly a treat!

I elected to circumcise my son, based on my reading at the time, I also felt there were future health issues that could/would be avoided, and partly because his dad was circumcised.

I am not sure how motivated I would be with an older child versus a new born, as the older child is more sore, whilst a newborn was mild discomfort (I can only assume based on his reaction, as clearly I have not had my foreskin removed so am not totally sure of the pain involved.)

I read this blog post a little while ago and went to look for it again when I say this thread.

It is written from a man's perspective and also when he became a father - the comments after the post get a bit heated.

blog.patrickrothfuss.com/2010/04/concerning-circumcision/

It is very weighty subject, and at the end of the day we make the decision that our son's have to live with - what ever they are.

RM you are like a balm for my soul.

I didn't think about it at the time of his birth because it was not something that was done in my family, nor in DH's.

DH has been nagging me about it, and I have been stalling because I dont want to inflict pain on my boy...

I called the paed this am, but he has not called back yet, his receptionist did however give me the number of a specialist at Constantiaberg, and his receptionist in turn gave me the 'ballpark-figure'

btw, RM thank you for that link...I had a good ol laugh now.

I hated an uncut penis but I am a woman so I left the it up to Neil to choose for Dylan. He chose to leave Dylan uncut.

I was a bit sad about it. Not too keen on the foreskin myself so I did lots of reading and then read an interesting perspective from a man who said a circumcised penis was like a toyota reliable but boring. He had had a circumcision later in his Adult life and said he def had more feeling before he was cut. This changed my mind and made me realise that it was up to Dylan and if he wanted it done later we would do it for him.

That little red tip is often from rubbing. The foreskin protects the very sensitive tip of the penis from the friction from clothes etc. Without it the head of the penis becomes less sensitive which means the man may last longer before having an orgasm but it may be less enjoyable.

So to actually answer your question, I suggest you contact a paediatric urologist to have it done. Your paed or GP will be able to refer you to a good one close to you.

Were I to have had Dylan snipped I would have gotten a urologist to do it.
