Hello Ladies

Has anyone's kids been for relfux surgery? At what age and what symptoms did your child have to have before qualifying for the surgery?

My lb has had severe reflux since birth. I think its because he was 7 weeks prem. We only noticed it when he was 3 weeks old though. After thinking it was colic etc we realized it was reflux. He was prescribed Nexium and I was giving him NAN AR. Then AR went off the shelf and I was desperate. So with advice from the paed and midwife I put him on regular NAN with half maizena and half rice cereal. The reason we didn't put him on another reflux formual was because he had already been through various formulaes and we didn't want to upset him further. We did everything in the book- keeping him upright after meals, burping frequently etc...

Eventually he could take the NAN on its own. Great. He would still spit up and vomit once a day maybe. Better than what it was though. He started solids at 4 months because he was ready and it would help the reflux.

Now he seems to be back to square one. It's so bad that when he vomits he goes red in the face and gasps for air. Now this is why we haven't moved him into his own room yet. Sounds silly, but the fear is unbelievable.

I don't want him going for surgery unnecessarily but if it needs to happen then so be it.

Any advice?

Hi Chanz

My little boy has had it done twice. It may be different in my case because he has Edward syndrome and with the neurological problems he heaves when he wants his tummy to work, so it tends to pull loose, hence it being done a second time (which has since come loose again)

The main reason why we considered it was because he aspirates it back into his lungs and kept on getting aspiration pneumonia.

Where do you stay.

Our pead referred us to a dcotor Martin van Niekerk at Kloof hospital in Pretoria and he is absolutely fantastic. According to our doc the best in our area

Hi Butterflies

Thanks so much for the feedback. Unfortunately I am in Richards Bay, KZN.

Michael had bad pneumonia not so long ago, not sure if it was from aspiration though. But I do remember his xray having little white dots all over his lungs. Don't know if that means anything.

I am even struggling to give him slightly lumpier food. He is almost 7months old and has been on smooth purees since 4months. I am not putting any pressure on him but I don't want to keep him on smooth pureed food forever if you know what I mean. He gags extremely easily. It's one of the main reasons why he won't take a dummy, it makes him gag and then he vomits. I know with reflux they suggest a dummy but M just won't take it LOL.

I am seeing my midwife from the storks nest on Monday, so will have a chat with her and see what she thinks.

Maybe I am just worrying about nothing

Hi Chanz,
I am really praying for your little one. I know how it feels as my daughter was also preterm and suffered from bad reflux. I also saw a lot of doctors and got frustrated a lot as some just seemed like they didn't care.

My girl also went to the Radiology Deparment of Medi Clinic and they did an ink test. It proved that she had bad reflux.
I changed his milk to Nan AR too. I felt like it just didn't work at times.

But it passed and she is ok now. So, I really am praying that it works out for you too.

I've heard Dr Van Niekerk at Kloof excellent. And there's a Gastro section at Unitas, my cousin had adult surgery there by one of the world's leading Prof's. Sometimes they are more than prepared to give you info and point you in the right direction?

Good luck! We suffered with mild reflux with nathan who was 7 weeks preterm and i almost went mad, so strong hugs to you!
